Did you audition for the role in the pilot episode?

Yes, I did audition for Mulcahy but not for the pilot. I didn't get that chance and the part was played by George Morgan. The producers decided to recast the part before the first season production began, however, and that's when I was called in to read for it.

What sort of research, if any, did you do for the part of Father Mulcahy?

I did do research, mostly by talking to priests. I found the clergy very willing to be helpful.

Do you have a favorite episode?

I don't have a favorite though naturally I tend to relate more to the shows in which I had large parts.

What do you think of Mulcahy as a character?

I love the character. I love his imperfections especially.

Most people know you as Father Mulcahy. Does it bother you to always be reminded of that and not seen for the other work you have done?

It doesn't bother me to be to be remembered for the part. After all, I was seen in that role by millions of people. Also, I think all of us on the series are proud of it.

Other members of the cast were involved in writing and directing episodes, did you ever consider doing this yourself?

I knew the writers and had constant dialog with them about Mulcahy plot possibilities. That was close enough. Regarding directing, in the live theater I would feel quite at home. Not so with film.

You've had a lot of experience with improvisation. Was this encouraged on M*A*S*H?

Only in the show 'The Interview' was any kind of improvisation possible.

Over the years did you have much input into the way the character developed?

Yes, I did have input into the development of character. Writers for television usually rely on actors greatly for this if there is a long run.

Are you surprised by the number of people who still watch the show, many of whom weren't born when the show was made?

I'm sure everyone is surprised to see MASH continue in reruns with such strength.

Do you still watch the reruns yourself?

No, I don't watch anymore.

It's said that some of the cast had a fondness for practical jokes, was there a good off screen relationship between the cast members?

The relationship was excellent and still continues today.

Do you still remain in contact with the rest of the cast?

We do maintain contact though sometimes it flags a bit.

Larry Linville sadly died recently. What memories do you have of working with him?

Larry was always fun and hard working. We had a good time seeing each other in the days since the show too. We all miss him, just as we miss McLean Stevenson.

When the series ended you went on to do AfterMASH. Where you disappointed that this only ran for a couple of seasons?

Yes, I was a bit disappointed with the lack of a meaningful show in AfterMASH. I think the desire to make a 'zany' comedy got the writing off track.

Do you think there will ever be a M*A*S*H reunion show?

.It would be fun to do a reunion show. I hope we do it some day, but it better be soon. We're all getting on.
