The book opens with an introduction by Larry Gelbart in which he is interviewed by psychiatrist Sidney Freedman!! Then there follows a history of how M*A*S*H developed from the novel by Richard Hooker through the film to the casting and writing of the t.v series. The main part of the book, and probably the most important for fans, is a summary of all 251 episodes. The summaries are split into 11 sections, each section covering 1 season of the show. All the sections start with an interview with producers and writers of the show. The interviews give a good insight into how the show developed over the years. Throughout the book there are also interviews with the cast members. The interviews are o.k but they do tend to cover the same old questions and for some reason McLean Stevenson isn't featured at all. Suzy Kalter had access to all the scripts so the plot details are accurate. The problem is only one storyline is covered per summary and with each show having two or three stories I feel that some of the major storylines have been missed, I guess if every storyline was covered the book would be twice as big. The remainder of the book features a complete list of episodes including writers and directors. Also listed are awards won by the series and a comprehensive list of M*A*S*H merchandise that has been released. The Book is also full of great photographs. As well as stills from the show there are a lot of behind the scenes shots and some good publicity pictures of the actors. So is it a "Complete book of M*A*S*H" ?. Well not quite. I would have liked to have had more info on the original film with maybe a few pictures. The novel only gets a few lines and the other books aren't even mentioned which is a shame because a lot of people don't know about them.
Along with TCBOM this is a must have for any serious M*A*S*H fan. It features in-depth interviews with all the cast members plus Larry Gelbart, Gene Reynolds and Burt Metcalfe. It also has some great behind-the-scenes photo's.
You can get more details on the author's Web Site.
This is basically an episode guide covering the first five years of the show. The summaries are very brief and include writers, directors and guest star credits. The only pictures in the book are b/w shots of each cast member.
The book is a photo history of the production of the final episode. It contains loads of great photo's taken by Arlene Alda and hand written comments by Alan Alda.
With an introduction by Burt Metcalfe this is an excellent book for any serious trivia addict. It has over 1000 questions arranged in 101 sections. The questions will challenge even the most dedicated fan. It also contains a number of b/w photo's from the show. M*A*S*H Trivia:The Unofficial Quiz Book By George St. John Published by Bell Publishing Company; 1984 ISBN 0-517-436183 Another great quiz book again with approximately 1000 question. The questions are probably slightly easier than Paul Bertling's book but still challenging enough for most people. No pictures in this book but it does include questions about the original novel and the movie. Note: This book was first published in 1983 by Warner Books ISBN: 0-446-32000
The book is made up from a compilation of letters that Igor wrote during his stay with the 4077. Found in a musty attic, these letters reveal that Igor did not deserve the title of "kitchen ghoul" but was actually a gifted chef. Filled with very personal anecdotes, never-before-seen pictures, "Igorisms" and a host of deeelicious recipes, Secrets of The M*A*S*H Mess, will offer fans a new, entertaining and affectionate look at life inside their favorite show -- a la IGOR. You can get more info on Igor's web site.
If you read this book expecting it to be about the tv series you may be disappointed. But stick with it because it is a very moving account of William and Barbara Christopher raising their autistic son.
Drafted in 1951 Dr Apel was a surgeon at the 8076th MASH in Korea. He writes about the formation and daily activities of the unit stationed near the 38th parallel.
As it was published in 1953 this book is obviously not about the series. But Gene Reynolds asked every new writer of the show to read it. |
